yep, i typically only have an hour or two per week to game, and i got tired of the upgrades, the troubleshooting, the patching, the tweaking, etc........the relatively small increase in IQ on a PC was not worth all of that, entertaining friends is much nicer now, i am into big screen HD gaming with surround sound with several friends, simple controls, no fuss, turn it on, play, turn it off, no BS entertainment, when i was a hardcore gamer, yeah, i preferred the PC, and actually had hours a day to play, now i dont, so when i do have time i certainly dont want to be installing patches or such, nor do my friends want to stand around a PC watching someone play with a mouse and kb by themselves..

I am just using PowerDVD 6.5. I'm having no problems with it, so I'll stick with it. Playback is smooth as can be.

GTX = I can't hear it. The raptor is louder than it when I'm doing file copies.

I got the hd dvd player (360) to work on my laptop (17" wuxga) w/ an ati x1800

Wait, explain this "driver hack" to me. Do you plug in the drive, install the hack, and then you can just copy the files off the disc and play them from your computer (ala DVD Dectrypter)?

That's HDCP. Apparently your monitor does not support it.

A very long time. My E6300 took 37 minutes to encode a 5 minute clip at "lossless" quality.

Looking at the endgagdet page and your screenshot, it seems that HD DVD already has the extra features/movie split out into seperate files? So no more dumping crap out of vob files, instead we just copy the FEATURE*.EVO files and get only the movie?

That will be very handy for travelling. What's the total size you get for just the feature files on the discs you have? 15-20GB or so?

what do u do once u have the encryption keys? when/where do you put them? link?

I went w/ the hd dvd over blu ray b/c of the cost (although blu ray imho has better movie titles)

Actually, the program is already out and I've been toying with it. The source is already available too. Its called "BackupHDDVD". It works well, you just have to provide the title keys for the movie, which I'm still figuring out how to retrieve off the disk which is encrypted. I think I know exactly how to do it though.

Anyone know if this combo (xbox360 HD-DVD player + Cyberlink PowerDVD 7.0 + 7950GX2 + Dell 2405) will work?

I don't want to go out there and buy this stuff and only be able to see it in 480i or 480p. lamezors.

^--yea, that should work. I don't think it will downconvert until HDCP disks come out and you don't have a HDCP compliant connection. (that should be quite a while)

Sweet just bought the drive and upgraded to PowerDVD 7.0 Deluxe.
Now to install the ini file from the disk?

No.. I didn't need any other 'special' drivers under Windows XP SP2 for it to work. I just plugged it in and started watching movies. The only thing extra I installed was the toshiba driver hack that enables UDF2.5 file system so you can browse the file structure and easily rip the disk to your hard drive.

Where did you find this ini file?
I can't get it to play any HD-DVD's. Regular DVD's no prob but not HD-DVD's.

to get HD DVD running on your computer did you need a DVi to HDCP video cable? or normal DVi - DVi or VGA to VGA

i have a similar setup but only a 26" samsung screen at a native res of 1360x768

h2o, maybe you're confusing HDCP and HDMI? HDMI a connection type similar to DVI, HDCP is the whole BS content protection thing.

Ok so I can see the drive and disk and when I 1st tried to play it with PowerDvd 7.0 Deluxe it was a no go.
Then I read you need 7.0 Deluxe!!! or if you are leet enough you can find a version of 6.5 .
I ended up paying a butt load of money for software. Oh well.
Now my next problem is I need a HDCP capable monitor!!!!!

Yea this version of software actually checks that you have HDCP video card and monitor to display over DVI.

I will try VGA next. Ughh.

yes.. the right software makes the difference. PowerDVD 6.5 was an OEM piece of software I think that was never for sale. Just make sure you have a software that is HD-DVD and Blu-ray compatible. I think PowerDVD Ultra and a certain version of WinDVD 8 support it. Those are the only two legal ones I know of.

Yes, it played back without the HD-DVD in the drive, but it was only because I didn't know and left PowerDVD open, which still had the key stored in it for the session. Upon further review, if I close PowerDVD and try to play it back off the hard drive, it is just a black screen and gets no audio or scratched/bliping audio. I'm still searching for keys in the debug tool until the new 1.0 BackupHDDVD comes out because I'm curious as to where they are coming from in the player. I know which file on the HD-DVD stores the key, but it is one way encrypted. I'm not going to bother with keys off torrent sites or news groups, because they probably don't correspond to the disks I have. I doubt they have all the titles keys released yet.. and if they do, there is nothing guaranteeing its the US version of the movie.

With 6.5 when I open PDVD, and NOT just press the play button, and I click on one of the PDVD icons it doesn't work. After I play the movie or I play another movie then it would work.

Maybe it's just the software? I will try with Ultra later on.

What comes in 9 days. No, I don't want ATi. I was between eVGA and PNY because they were the cheapest. I'm just curious, what kind of performance will I get at 1280x1024 resolution with Oblivion. What are the settings I can use at that resolution?

if cheaper is better then you'll want to wait for the ati launch. even if you don't want ati, the price of the 8800 will probably drop.

I want to order the card Monday morning because I want it to arrive by Wednesday or Thursday when I get back home from college. I'll only drop around $20 or so and I can deal with that. Besides, ATI doesn't do hard launches so it will be a few weeks for 8800 prices to drop significantly.
