- 孟德Asus K8N4-E Firewire connector ???
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I have a Firewire plug on the front of my case and am not sure where to plug the wires into the motherboard to get it to work! Could some one please guide me to where i would plug the wire s into the motherboard?
Cheers. - 孟德Workstation Motherboards?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyone doing any CAD, Rendering, heavy Photoshop/Video editing or development work from home (SOHO), have any good suggestions for workstation boards?
Heck, where's a good place to read some reviews of recent or upcoming offerings? Currently, [H]OCP doesn't have an audience to provide these types of reviews. So, maybe we can see who all here is interested and get a discussion going. If that's the case I'll go ahead and reserve a few posts and we can dish out a small FAQ for current and maybe some future offerings.
I know Tyan makes some good offerings and ASUS has been slowly coming to the market with budget friendly workstation boards. But what else is out there (Besides Intel)? - 孟德Reserved for me.
- 孟德Reserved for me x2.
- 孟德Tyan doesn't make especially good motherboards. Supermicro and ASUS do, but few other companies have specific workstation motherboards.
- 孟德Building a gaming rig, which parts to get?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game - World of Warcraft
Monitor - Dell 2407WFP (already have)
Budget - $750-$1500
I need a computer that will run WoW + background programs (fraps, AIM, excel, mozilla, etc.) flawlessly (60 fps) at 1920*1200 res. on my 24" monitor. Overclocking is fine by me, but it isn't necessary; just list the parts and set-up you'd use if you were making this rig for yourself. Thanks - 孟德Quote:

It does make a difference in stability. The nb heatsink on the DS3 is adequate but not good for good overclocking. - 孟德Quote:

Yah, what Danny said. You could also put a fan on the there, instead of replacing the entire HS. Oh, and to answer your question earlier about if that was me on 3dmark... nah, it wasn't. I built that system for a friend, and I dont know if he reported his benches to ORB - 孟德Quote:

On my old p4 overclocked from 2.8 to 3.34, the fan was starting to make a loud screeching noise. So I unplugged it. It was still running stable after that. That's why I didn't think NB needed that much cooling. Possibly it's different on core2 motherboards?
I looked on newegg for an add-on NB fan. There really isn't such thing. Only thing I could find was a replacement to the original one coupled with a fan. Any ideas on an inexpensive add-on fan solution?

It all depends on the chipset and how good the stock HS/HSF is. - 孟德Hmmm... by this statement, you're saying that my DS3 has a NB fan. Unless I'm looking in the wrong, place I am pretty damn sure it's a passive cooling... it's a heatstink about an inch tall.
- 孟德he means that the hr-05 is a better choice than mine, since it is passive ie silent. its really up to you...both will cool the nb adequately
- 孟德Sorry what I meant was that the passive cooling heatsink on the DS3 is not too great. I was recommending the Hr-05 as a better passive solution than the stock NB heatsink on the DS3.
- 孟德To each his own I guess.

It doesnt come with a fan, you have to buy it seperately as an add-on. You could glue it, but I screwed mine in, lol.
40mm fan? - 孟德#18 04-27-2007, 03:36 PM

I think so... I had it layin around. I had the HR-05 on there, but my Ultra-D needed it more than my DS3, lol. - 孟德What do you mean by easier? Less cooling? Also, what about 10k rpm?
- 孟德raptors>cheetahs>barracudas>caviars
and no, this is not a food chain
anyways, 2 320gb 7200.10 barracudas in RAID0 will cost the same as a 150gb raptor, but will provide more storage space and better performance (or am i wrong?) - 孟德#27 04-29-2007, 02:43 PM

The 'cuda's avg transfer rate is about 65MB/s, whereas the raptor's is 78MB/s. While the drive isn't exactly "as fast" per se, its pretty damn fast for a 7200RPM drive (my WD2500KS only gets 52MB/s). The 10K RPM helps with seek times... which translates to faster reading/writing. Considering the price of the two, the 'cuda is clearly the best bang for buck. Though, like I said earlier, the raptor is more of a luxury, since the 'cuda is almost as fast for alot less cost.
k, so the barracudas have more than 4 times the storage space and at least 1.5x transfer rate as the raptor, but the raptor has lower seek times. how much difference would that make in rl? would u please link me to a review? thx in advance - 孟德Nice choices. The single 'cuda is pretty fast. Try it out first. If you don't like it, grab another. Though, if you don't image your drive, you'll need to re-install everything again once the raid array is setup, hehe.
- 孟德The 7200.10's seem to be a really popular drive. I'm trying to decide between a 250gb 7200.10 or a WD 2500KS 7200rpm SATA drive, and its a mixed response on which one is truly quieter and performs better.

These are my own tests with HDTune on the rig in my sig... avg transfer rates:
52MB/s - WD2500KS (WD Caviar SE16 250GB 16MB Cache SATA300)
65MB/s - ST3320620AS (Seagate 'cuda 7200.10 320GB 16MB Cache SATA300)
78MB/s - WD1500ADFD (WD Raptor 150GB 16MB Cache SATA150) - 孟德Wow, a computer with a tumor. Never thought I'd see the day.

Yes! lmao... i thought that asus Vento was ugly, but this has stooped to a new low. - 孟德lets hope not
- 孟德looks as though the bottom fell out kinda look. I like the black gloss look but that look is very plastic like and appears cheap. Was the OP on crack or really interested in this FUGLY case? Taste is everyone's right, so if he/she likes it, well good for them.
I do not.
