I really enjoy how a lot of these smaller labels today are attempting to create new styles of releases by releasing their album packages in different formats. Midwinter's debut album "Enthrone in Blizzard" was limited to 500 copies which is nothing new in the realm of black metal, but 200 were reserved strictly for Chinese citizens. Past this, the album comes packages in an A5 Digifile which is similar to a J-card that you see in cassette tapes, but is cardboard and much larger (about the size of a DVD case). Also comes with two cards inside and the CD is a real pressing, not a CD-R like most A5 releases you come across. Not much is known about this act (as they are from China, there's not much that probably CAN be known about them for their own safety). It is known that guitarist Bloodfire is also in Yn Gizarm, Varuna, and Hellward. It is also known that they are from Xi'an and were founded in 2005. They also have a huge presence of heathenism in their music which they pride, as well as patriotism for China.
The music is almost epic in its atmosphereic edge. While there are only three members, the music has some fantastic guitar layers. The music isn't raw enough to be considered in vain of Xasthur, in fact, the production on this album is quite good, especially for Chinese Black Metal. The few Chinese BM bands that I have heard in my time have had horrible production quality, making this a rare find indeed. The vocals are also unique. While sometimes they are your standard black metal vocals, the vocalist does branch of from time to time. In Lurid Horizon he sounds exactly like Fernando Ribeiro of Moonspell fame. The drums aren't really the blast style either, taking a slower tempo but using quite a large amount of double bass. This gives the music a doomy approach as well, making the atmosphere even more dark and epic.
It's sad that I can't tell you to run out and buy this one because it's sold out via the Pest Productions label. The music was incredible, especially for a Chinese act. I do believe you can still find this album on Under the Dark Soil Distribution though. I'll guarantee that this is fifty times better than the random Burzum track you've got spinning in your record player or the bullshit Mayhem file you're playing from Soulseek. Go support real music.
Under The Dark Soil Distribution (Under The Dark Soil Distribution ( www.
