Several years ago Pizza Hut announced it was removing salad bars from itsrestaurants in China as part of a menu revamp.

But many believe the real reason behind thechange in policy was because crafty Chinese customers were getting around a'one-trip' rule by creating these incredible towers of salad.

Unlike the comparatively generous Britishand U.S. Pizza Hut branches, customers in China were told they could only haveone trip to fill a single plate at the salad bar.

They wanted their visit to be worth it, and so they devised these ever morecomplicated salad structures that allowed them to pack the most possible fruitand veg on a single plate.

The practice, known as 'salad stacking',soon became a fad as stackers shared pictures of their efforts online and triedto outdo each other.

Salad engineers would exchange tips online, such as starting off theircreations with a strong base of stiff vegetables like carrots, cucumbers andcroutons.

So when Pizza Hut, whose branches in the Far East are more akin to upscalerestuarants than cheap and cheerful fast food diners, announced it was removingsalad bars from its Chinese restaurants, it was widely believed salad stackingwas to blame.、

Of course, when people heard of thedecision, that only encouraged them to make even more salad towers before theylost their chance, Kotakureported.

The site added that not all China's PizzaHut salad bars have been removed, with some still remaining in Beijingbranches. Salad stacking, however, is no longer en vogue.

Don't waste your food! Think of all thestarving children in Chi... Wait. What? Oh, never mind.
- stumbles,ottawa, Canada, 30/7/2013 8:31
Inscrutable............
- SecretSquirrel,Exposing Those Nuts, United States, 30/7/2013 8:07
they probably have stomach problems aftereating that much fruit in one setting.
- Rosy,CA, 30/7/2013 7:42
Not at all surprising... having lived inChina for three years, it would astound me when attending one of the manyall-you-can eat Sunday brunches at any of the five-star hotels in Shanghai, howthe locals would pile their plates like it was their last meal with EVERYTHING- salad, carvery, dessert... you name it... reminded me of pigs at a troughactually.

remember years back you used to pay foreither a bowl or a plate for the salad bar which allowed you one trip. I wentwith the bowl everytime as it was cheaper and you could stack a lot !! Iactually thought I was pretty good till I went to the far east. I looked like abeginner compared to the locals, have to say I learned alot and implemented itonce back home :D . I just loved the stares from staff and other customers onewould get returning to the table, yep i was rather smug .

Pizza Hut in China... along with McDs, KFC,Tesco, Walmart, Apple etc etc.... how many Chinese branded high street storesdo you know of in the US and Britain???
- Bobthe Welder, London, United Kingdom, 30/7/2013 7:33
So the greedy minority ruined it for themajority - so often the case.
- Teresa,Cape Town, 30/7/2013 7:29
Reminds me of when Pizza Hut opened in theUK and you could only make one trip to the salad bar - saw a fat old man withan over-piled plate shoving tomatoes into his pockets. He so needed to eat moresalad!
- Helen,London, 30/7/2013 7:20
Very disgraceful behaviour to say theleast. When was the last time they had eaten? Always wants more for little.
- meiling,Toronto, Canada, 30/7/2013 7:19
you'd really have to like salad to do allthat. With all that weight, the stuff at the bottom must be like mush. yuck.
- Keithy,London UK, 30/7/2013 7:10
Simple solution, charge for the salad by weight, that'll stop the stupid stacking idiots!!!!!
- Chaz,Birmingham, 30/7/2013 7:03
That's weird. All the Pizza Hut salad barsin America are always full. Except for the ones near L.A.
- Max,Brooklyn, 30/7/2013 7:01
Real men eat meat and spuds, not salad.
- Clemmo,Doncaster, United Kingdom, 30/7/2013 6:36
Impressive but unfortunately Pizza Hut'ssalad tastes like compost so totally wasted effort!
- Dave,Gosport, United Kingdom, 30/7/2013 6:24
And while you spend time creating thismaster piece the pizza at the table is getting cold.
- iz66,London, United Kingdom, 30/7/2013 6:23
